About the Project
The ZDrauA project is a cross-border initiative between Slovenia and Austria, focused on promoting the sustainable management and ecological health of the Drava River.
The project introduces innovative next-generation biomonitoring (NGB) approaches, including advanced methods such as environmental DNA (eDNA) and high-throughput sequencing. These tools enable more accurate and efficient assessment of biodiversity, water quality, and pollution, addressing key environmental and public health challenges.
ZDrauA contributes to the implementation of major European environmental policies, including the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD). A central focus of the project is the harmonisation of monitoring methodologies and the strengthening of cooperation among research institutions, public authorities, and stakeholders.
The Interreg Slovenia-Austria project ZDrauA
Next-generation biomonitoring of Drava/Drau for sustainable and healthy regional development comprises four research organizations that aim to foster freshwater quality assessment in the region using state-of-the-art molecular methods.
